- Description: Most File Manager questions come down to a handful of settings and limits. Here is how to show .htaccess, get deleted files back, find a file fast and work around the edit and upload limits.

Most cPanel File Manager problems have quick fixes: turn on **Show Hidden Files (dotfiles)** in Settings to see `.htaccess`, use **View Trash** and **Restore** to get a deleted file back, use the search box set to the right scope to find a file, and download files over 1 MB to edit them locally because the built-in editor will not open them. The rest of this guide goes through each problem in the order people usually meet them.

For the basics of uploading, permissions and archives, see our earlier [cPanel File Manager guide](https://soft2hosting.com/blog/cpanel-file-manager-usage-guide-shared-hosting/).

## "I can't see my .htaccess file"

Files whose names start with a dot are hidden by default. Open File Manager, click **Settings** at the top right, tick **Show Hidden Files (dotfiles)** and save. The same Settings dialog lets you choose which folder File Manager opens in: your home directory, the web root, the public FTP folder or a specific domain's document root. If you mostly work on one site, set it to that site's folder.

Once visible, treat `.htaccess` with care. Apache's documentation explains that a `.htaccess` file applies to the folder it sits in and every folder below it, and that it is read on every request, so a change takes effect immediately. A typing mistake in it can take the whole site down with a 500 error, so copy the file before editing it.

## "I deleted the wrong file"

Deleting in File Manager normally moves the item to Trash rather than removing it. Click **View Trash**, select the file and click **Restore**. Two things make this permanent:

- Choosing to skip the trash when deleting.
- Clicking **Empty Trash**, which permanently deletes everything in it.

Trash is not a backup, and it fills your disk quota until emptied. If a file is truly gone, restore it from your hosting backup instead. Soft2Hosting's Starter Pro plan includes weekly backups, Business Pro daily backups, and Enterprise Pro daily backups with restore.

## "I can't find the file"

The search box in File Manager has three scopes: all your files, only `public_html`, or the current directory. Searching everything on an account with years of email and backups can be slow, so pick `public_html` for website files. A "No records found" message means nothing matched in that scope, so widen it before assuming the file does not exist.

## "Edit is not working on this file"

Three causes account for most cases:

- **Size.** cPanel's documentation says files larger than 1 MB cannot be edited in the interface. Download the file, edit it in a local editor, then upload it back.
- **More than one file selected.** Edit, View and Rename act only on the first selected file. Select just the one you want.
- **Encoding.** File Manager asks for a character encoding when opening a file. If the text appears garbled, the wrong encoding was chosen; close without saving, because saving can corrupt the file.

## "I can't upload a folder"

File Manager uploads individual files, not folders. Compress the folder into a .zip on your computer, upload the archive and use **Extract**. The same trick works for copying a folder inside the account. File Manager supports .zip, .gz and .bz2 archives, and zip requires the server to have zip installed.

You also cannot copy an item into the folder it is already in. Copy it to another folder, or download it to your computer, before making changes you might want to undo.

## "The site broke after I changed permissions"

The default permission for files is 0644, which lets the web server read them and only your account write them. Change permissions through the Permissions button, and avoid giving files or folders write access for everyone. If a site breaks right after a permission change, set files back to 0644 and folders back to what they were before.

## Smaller things worth knowing

- **Git folders:** cPanel advises against changing files in a folder that holds a Git repository through File Manager; use Git instead.
- **Grey buttons:** actions that cannot apply to your selection are shown grey; select a file or folder first.
- **Folder tools:** password protection, leech protection and index settings appear only where the host has enabled them.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Editing `.htaccess` or `wp-config.php` without copying it first.
- Emptying Trash straight after a clean-up, before checking the site still works.
- Saving a file that opened with garbled characters.
- Using File Manager to move a whole site; use a backup and restore or a migration plan instead.

File Manager is included on every [Soft2Hosting cPanel shared hosting plan](https://soft2hosting.com/web-hosting/), from Starter Pro to Enterprise Pro.
