WordPress Shared Hosting Optimisation: Caching, Plugins and Staying Within Limits

WordPress on shared hosting gets fast when you do less work per visit: cache full pages, send smaller images, run fewer and lighter plugins, and use a current PHP version. Do them in that order, measure before and after, and most small business sites become noticeably faster without changing plans.

Step 1: measure

Run your home page and a typical inner page through PageSpeed Insights, on mobile. Note time to first byte, total page weight and the largest images. web.dev's guidance on TTFB explains what the server-side part of that number means. Write the results down.

Step 2: cache full pages

A page cache serves ready-made HTML to visitors instead of running PHP and database queries on every request. On Soft2Hosting's Business Pro and Enterprise Pro plans, which list LiteSpeed with cache, the LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress works directly with the server's cache. On other setups, use one well-known caching plugin, not several.

Step 3: fix images

  • Resize images to the largest size your theme actually displays.
  • Compress them and use modern formats where your theme supports them.
  • Lazy-load images below the fold. WordPress does this by default for many images.

Step 4: trim plugins

Each active plugin adds code to every request. Remove plugins you do not use, replace heavy all-in-one plugins with lighter single-purpose ones, and be wary of plugins that run database queries on every page load. The WordPress Advanced Administration Handbook's optimisation chapter describes the main places time is lost.

Step 5: use a current PHP version

Newer PHP versions are generally faster and receive security fixes. In cPanel's MultiPHP Manager you can change the version per domain. Test on a staging copy or during a quiet hour, because an old plugin may not support the newest version.

Step 6: object cache where available

Enterprise Pro Hosting lists Redis cache. A persistent object cache helps logged-in users, WooCommerce carts and the admin dashboard, which a page cache cannot help.

Staying within shared hosting limits

  • Schedule heavy tasks such as backups and imports outside business hours.
  • Block bad bots and brute-force login attempts with a security plugin or rules.
  • Clean out old revisions, spam comments and expired transients periodically.
  • Keep storage in check: large backup archives left in your account count towards the NVMe limit.

A worked example

A local restaurant site on Starter Pro loads slowly on phones. Measurement shows a large home page, several uncompressed hero photos and six plugins, two of which add sliders nobody uses. The fix list: compress and resize the photos, remove the unused slider plugins, install one caching plugin and switch to a current PHP version in MultiPHP Manager. Re-measuring on mobile shows a much lighter page and a quicker first response, with no change of plan needed.

Theme choice

A lightweight theme that loads only what each page needs will outperform a feature-heavy theme with every option switched on. If you are redesigning anyway, choose a theme known for performance and add features through a small number of focused plugins.

Revisit these steps whenever you add a major plugin or redesign, and re-measure afterwards, so speed does not slowly slip back.

Frequently asked questions

Which caching plugin should I use?

On a LiteSpeed-based plan, LiteSpeed Cache. Otherwise choose one reputable caching plugin and configure it carefully. Two page caches at once cause problems.

Why is the admin dashboard slow when the site is fast?

The page cache does not apply to logged-in users. Trim admin-heavy plugins, and use an object cache where your plan provides one.

Does WooCommerce work on shared hosting?

Yes, for small and medium shops. Exclude cart, checkout and account pages from the page cache.

How do I know the changes worked?

Re-run the same measurements from step 1 on the same pages, on mobile, and compare.
